A catalogue of over 600 different sizes of cardboard boxes can surprise anyone. Therefore, a wide range of boxes guarantees finding the model that best adapts to your company’s needs. However, how to find it? At RAJA we want to make it easy for you to choose the most suitable size for each case.

How to choose the right size for your cardboard boxes? What information is important for you to find the ideal model? In this article, we show you step by step the process you need to follow.

1.choose the thickness: single, double or triple corrugated?

Above all, so that you can choose one thickness or another, it is essential to take into consideration the weight of the goods you have to send. So, what does “single, double or triple fluted” mean? Corrugated cardboard is the most commonly used format in boxes. Likewise, its thickness is composed of an inner sheet, a corrugated cardboard sheet and an outer sheet. This sheet acquires this sinuosity with the action of a fluted roller and the use of water vapour.

Depending on the product that has to be packaged, we will choose the most suitable cardboard for its protection. All these formats have a testliner coating that favours the adhesion of the adhesive tape to its surface.

The thickness of the cardboard is taken into consideration:

Simple corrugated: they usually have a width of approximately 5 mm and are suitable for lightweight products of up to 20 kg such as documents, clothing, footwear or packaged products that can be stacked. It is formed by an inner cover of a wave.

Double corrugated: to protect products weighing up to 70 kg, resistant to vertical compression such as books, tools, technology, etc. With a thickness of 7 mm and an inner cover of two waves. They are ideal for fragile products, as their reinforced protection prevents any blow from easily reaching the inside.

Triple fluted: has an outer kraft lining that protects against humidity and temperature. Designed for heavy loads of up to 350 kg that support export shipments and long-term storage. It is 15 mm thick and has a 3-wave inner cover. The triple corrugated is also designed to protect very delicate products: porcelain, glassware, etc.

To easily identify which type of corrugation you should choose, we have prepared the following table:

2. What are the dimensions that the personalised cardboard box must have?

Four criteria you should take into consideration:

a) What is the size of the product to be shipped?

It is necessary to define well the weight and the maximum dimensions so that the packaging adapts as much as possible to your products and the means of transport. Furthermore, the items must have standard measurements that add up to 150 cm taking into account their length, width and height. In the post office, the weights vary according to the carrier.

b) Do the products need to have an additional lining for greater security?

The packaging material represents an extra volume to be considered when managing the packaging of products. There are several types of filling possible. It is therefore necessary to evaluate the space each one takes up, as it is not the same to fill a box with splinters than with foam, which adapts to the shape of the object.

c) What is the shape of the product you want to send?

In addition to the size of the packaging, it is necessary to check the format of each product. For example, telescopic boxes are designed for sending flat products (photos, pictures, frames, etc…), long boxes for long and narrow products such as fabrics, sheets or transport tubes for documents, files and rolled products.

d) What is the storage space in your company?

Taking up too much space in your company’s warehouse can represent a very important indirect cost. Likewise, many of the boxes offer solutions adapted to take up as little space as possible: boxes of varying height or width, for example, can be used for different types of products without having to use more filling or leave large empty spaces. However, you can also adapt telescopic boxes to different heights, making them useful for various shipments.

Only, without a doubt, the possibility of having deliveries available within 48/72 hours of packaging is ideal for companies with reduced storage space: it allows you to always have a stock of boxes and thus not have to worry about restocking. You must remember that cardboard boxes, due to their composition, can deteriorate during long periods of storage (humidity, debris, heat, direct contact with the sun, etc.), so it is always advisable to take this into consideration.

How to use box selector, the tool that finds the box that fits you

If you have any doubts about the measurements of the boxes, a good tool is the box selector. Just enter the product characteristics such as length, width and height and the tool will display the search results among the 600 models available at RAJA.

3. Do you need customised boxes with special features?

Automatic bins for quick assembly

This format facilitates the packaging process, as it is quickly assembled by simply pressing the sides. A traditional box takes an average of 22 seconds to assemble, while the automatic box model only takes nine seconds.

Furthermore, this type of box has an automatic bottom and is reinforced with a double layer of cardboard, as well as opening with a toothed strip. It is also developed in single fluted recyclable cardboard with a kraft lid.

Boxes with built-in adhesive closure

The boxes with built-in adhesive closure guarantee, above all, optimum sealing and a unique presentation. In addition, they save a lot of time when preparing the order, as they do not require the adhesive tape. For example, among this type of models, we highlight boxes with double adhesive tape. They are used mainly in e-commerce because they are designed to facilitate the return of goods: the customer can open the package and, if he has to send the product back, he can also use the same box, closing it with the second adhesive tape. In short, companies manage to register fewer incidents and consumers value the brand and its shipments more for the facilities they receive.

Bins with integrated protection

These are the standard size boxes prepared for the shipping of more fragile products. They incorporate protection in the same box to guarantee the perfect preservation of its contents. Two good examples of boxes with protection are:

  • Foam-filled bins: used to transport the most sensitive products, such as technology, electronics, etc. The product is wrapped in the foam, it prevents and protects from any movement that may occur.
  • Korrvu boxes: common for shipping mobile phones, tablets, laptops, etc. It is a box with an inner module that always keeps the contents away from any impact. To prevent any movement, the product is fixed with film. Without a doubt, a very useful and differentiating box.

Boxes for specific uses

Within the range of boxes that are available, there are solutions for products that require special packaging. For example, the boxes for bottles include a system of spacers that is ideal for keeping the bottles fixed and avoiding any kind of impact. On the other hand, if you want to maintain the product’s temperature, there are also various formats of isothermal boxes.

Height and width adjustable bins

Variable height boxes are a very useful solution for all those who need packages of different sizes. There are 12 possibilities to make a shipment with a customised box.

There are also adjustable width boxes that, under the same concept, see their interior changed to contain more or less products. Its operation is based on the width of the adjustable cardboard and is ideal to avoid unnecessary shipping expenses to secure the products.
