Safe transport of glass

3min read 17/04/2018

Transporting glass involves a high risk of damage. How to transport glass objects safely? How to pack glass shipments correctly? This is discussed below.

Glass items are fragile and therefore need to be properly secured during transport to prevent damage. This is important both when moving and shipping glass goods. Transporting glass items always involves a certain amount of risk, but this can be significantly minimised by properly securing the consignment. Amongst others, cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, polyethylene foam or parcel fillers – so-called polystyrene chips – are used to transport glass safely. In addition, each parcel with glass inside should be marked appropriately.

Transporting glass objects – how to do it safely?

Transporting glass, especially mirrors and family heirlooms, is quite a challenge. Glass is fragile, so it can break and, besides, get scratched. Therefore, these types of items need to be packed and secured very carefully. The safe transport of glass items requires the collection of packing materials and proper packing. Of course, in the case of a move, if you do not want to take care of this yourself, you can have a removal company do the packing, transporting and even unloading of the glass.

Mirrors can be the worst to transport due to their large glass surface. But also lamps, chandeliers, glass furniture elements, glass dishes and vases or glass works of art are problematic.

It is a good idea to protect mirrors with bubble wrap sealed with tape and, of course, to label them. Irregularly shaped lamps and chandeliers are also problematic to transport, so it is best to wrap the shades in paper or fabric and put them in a cardboard box. For glass pieces of furniture, it is best to dismantle them and pack them separately, securing them, and if they cannot be removed for transport, protect them with special foam profiles. Smaller items such as glasses, goblets or vases should be wrapped in packing paper or protective film and arranged in cardboard boxes so that there is no slack between them. Styrofoam chips can be used.

Packing glass parcels

Before you set about packing your glass items, it is a good idea to gather the appropriate protective materials, i.e. cardboard boxes, papers or protective film, etc. You can also stock up on special removal cartons, as they are more resistant to tearing than ordinary ones. Cartons are the basis for packing glass objects. Good quality ones are made of strong corrugated cardboard.

The carton should be selected not only in terms of thickness, but also in terms of size and shape. A cardboard box that is too big will cause the objects placed in it to move during transport and may be damaged. It is advisable to reinforce the bottom of the cardboard box with strong tape to prevent it from tearing.

It is also important to determine the packing sequence. The larger items should be packed first and the small items last. Thus, mirrors and lamps are packed first, followed by glassware and trinkets. If there are empty spaces in the box, they need to be filled, for example with the aforementioned polystyrene chips. The most delicate items should be placed first in a smaller and then in a larger box.

Finally, packages with glass should be correctly labelled with the words: Attention, glass!
