Do you know how to ensure the stabilisation of parcels and pallets?

3min read 26/10/2018

In order to minimise the risk of damage to the load during transport, it must be secured in an appropriate manner. While simple adhesive tape is often sufficient for small shipments, heavier, bulky goods need stronger protection, such as strapping tape.

The process of strapping packages for transport is called banding. In practice, it requires the use of not only strapping, but also special fasteners – and often other strapping accessories, such as a tensioner or strapping tool.

It should also be added that propylene strapping is the most commonly used tape for professional securing of shipments. Why these and what else do you need to know in order to effectively secure a load with them?

Polypropylene strapping – advantages

Polypropylene straps are usually sealed in a cardboard box, which also serves as an unwinder. As they are available in several variants differing in thickness and width, they are suitable for securing a wide variety of parcel and pallet loads.

Also responsible for the wide range of applications for such tapes are their high durability and flexibility, which make fixing robust yet relatively easy. It is also worth noting that the tape surrounding the package can also act as a handle, which facilitates its smooth and safe handling.

Basic bundling kit: strapping tapes, clips and tensioners

During banding, the package is wrapped with a binding tape, the ends of which are then joined together using special fasteners. The latter can be made from plastic, sheet metal or wire. The choice of the right type and size of fastener is determined primarily by the size and weight of the package to be secured.

In general, however, the wire fasteners are most commonly used for manual packaging of packages due to their versatility and ease of use. The plastic version is suitable for securing small and lightweight parcels,, while the tin version is ideal for cases where it is necessary to exclude the risk of tape splices breaking.

When packing parcels requiring good security, a special strapping tensioner is often used – mostly used where the strapping is joined by wire fasteners.

It makes bundling much quicker and more comfortable, and gives the strap a firm hold to protect the package.

Tying straps – applications

As already mentioned, banding kits have a very wide range of applications. They are particularly suitable for use in shops and warehouses, where the securing of goods for shipment is usually of a mass nature and must be carried out quickly and efficiently.

In practice, however, strapping can also prove useful in “domestic” applications, for example when moving house or transporting individual items that require really good security. It is also worth using them when packing pallet loads and other heavy and bulky parcels.

In our shop, we offer not only a wide range of strapping tapes, but also all strapping accessories used for strapping cartons and pallet loads – including, among others, self-locking polypropylene strapping clips, strapping racks and trolleys, strapping tensioners and strapping machines for precise horizontal and vertical strapping.
