Adhesive tape – get to know it better!

3min read 09/04/2019

Adhesivetape is one of those products that – in the popular mind – holds no secrets, and many people do not bother to choose the right type. This is a mistake, because adhesive tape has very different properties – depending on the type of material used, as well as the adhesive used. Find out the most important information about adhesive tape!

Backing and adhesive – this is what adhesive tape is made of

Self-adhesive tape is a very simple construction – it consists of two components of a carrier and an adhesive. However, the characteristics of the tape depend on their choice. When it comes to the carrier, the film, the following are available:

The type of carrier used determines the resistance to atmospheric conditions – moisture or sun – as well as durability. Thickness is another important parameter. This is expressed in microns, and the thicker the adhesive tape is, the greater the load it can withstand.

The second element that makes up an adhesive tape is the adhesive. Tapes with the following types of adhesive are available:

  • acrylic
  • natural rubber
  • synthetic rubber.

The choice of adhesive mainly affects the speed and durability of bonding. Natural rubber and acrylic are very durable and strong. The latter is additionally fully transparent. Synthetic rubber, on the other hand, is the adhesive that binds the fastest, so the bonding practically immediately holds with maximum strength.

How do I apply adhesive tape correctly?

Applying self-adhesive tape correctly does not seem like a difficult task, but it is worth bearing in mind a few rules to make the bond as durable as possible. First of all, make sure the surface to which the tape is being applied is clean and dry. It is also worth taking into account the ambient temperature. If it’s below 10 degrees Celsius, it’s best to use polypropylene or rubberised rubber adhesive tape. If, on the other hand, the adhesive tape is applied at high temperatures, one with an acrylic adhesive will work better.

How much adhesive tape should I use?

It is also important to match the amount of adhesive tape to the packaging – especially its weight and storage time. The heavier the weight and the longer the storage, the more tape needs to be used. However, you need to choose the right places for application. Start with the bottom and lid of the cardboard box, but also reinforce the corners and areas where the box bends – these are always critical points, which can tear due to weather or mechanical damage. Properly applied tape will prevent this from happening.

This is how adhesive tape works!

Choosing and applying adhesive tape is not difficult, but it is worth being aware that there are different types of this product. This makes it even easier to choose the right tape for your needs and thus better protect your goods from shipping or storage.
