Parcel fillings. What is available apart from bubble wrap?

4min read 29/07/2019

Appropriate filling for shipments is a very important element – the condition in which the product is sent to the recipient depends on this. How do you secure it properly? What can be used as filling?

If the parcel is well-packed, its contents will not be damaged during transport. The recipient will receive the ordered goods in perfect condition. It is the responsibility of the sender to ensure that the parcel is packed properly. Courier companies and other operators stipulate in their terms and conditions that the principal is obliged to properly secure the parcel. And parcel fillers are useful for proper packing.

How to properly secure the contents of a parcel, i.e. not only parcel fillers

A parcel can be damaged in transit, but correct packaging protects against such damage. Parcels travel by truck, but they also move through the sorting office and are not always treated as they should be. The shipping company is only responsible for transporting the parcel. If a parcel is damaged, the recipient has the right to claim a refund or a replacement from the sender.

Here are some tips on how to pack a parcel properly:

  • use high quality 3 or 5 – layer cardboard boxes, sized to fit the contents.
  • each item should be secured separately.
  • it is best to close the parcel with a suitable adhesive tape.
  • most important – it is necessary to use a parcel filler. There are many filling materials. They come in the well-known form of bubble wrap, foam or polystyrene chips. If there is a high demand for parcel fillers, you can use paper or air-filled systems to produce parcel fillers depending on your needs.

3 steps to good parcel packaging – product packaging, outer packaging and parcel filler

First of all, you need to package the product itself to be shipped. It can be wrapped in bubble wrap or foam – this is especially true for fragile and delicate goods. The second stage is the outer packaging, i.e. the cardboard box. It is best to choose those made of thick and sturdy cardboard. It should be sealed with strong adhesive tape designed for parcels. The filling for the parcels, i.e. the filling of the inside of the cardboard box, is also very important. This is important because it prevents the goods from moving during transport and is therefore less likely to be damaged. Traditionally used bubble wrap, polystyrene chips or foam are excellent options. If you send a large number of parcels, fillers will be indispensable.

Types of fillings for parcels

Polystyrene chips

This type of parcel filler is used to pack into voids in the transport carton. It is designed to stabilise products. Importantly, eco-friendly Flo-pak® fillers made from recycled polystyrene are available. They are environmentally friendly and biodegradable, when exposed to water and air. They do not produce toxic substances. At the same time, they are strong and durable – ideal for securing even heavier items. They can be purchased in bags or dispenser cartons.
