Absorbent sachets – an essential item missing from your consignments

5min read 13/11/2019

High quality packaging is just as important as adequate protection for the goods inside. Depending on the industry and the type of goods being shipped, it is worth taking care to ensure optimum protection inside your package. To this end, it is best to consider using moisture-absorbing sachets.

Two basic questions to ask yourself when preparing goods for shipment are:

  1. Is my packaging of good quality?
  2. Are the goods inside adequately protected?

By attaching moisture-absorbing sachets or moisture absorbers to your shipments, you can only gain confidence that the goods you are sending will arrive unscathed. This is the ideal way to protect them! The sachets are small and discreet and have strong absorbent properties, so your products will stay dry.

Definition of an absorbent sachet

An absorbent sachet, sometimes also called a moisture absorber or, simply, a moisture absorber, is a product designed to protect goods. Moisture absorbers, often present in packaging containing food or clothing, improve the transport conditions of your goods.

How does a desiccant sachet work?

The drying properties of sachets are due to the presence of two types of minerals in their composition: silica and clay. Each responds to a specific need, but their functions are identical and their mode of action similar.

How do I use a damp absorber?

The function of the beads, contained in the sachet, is to absorb moisture from the pack in which they are placed. For this reason, simply place one (or more, depending on the size of the package) small pouch of silicone beads or clay in your package – and you’re done!

Silica gel – for food, electronics and textiles

Silica gel, is currently the most common filler for moisture-absorbing sachets. Thanks to its high drying power, the silica beads placed in the sachet keep your parcels dry.

When is it advisable to use moisture-absorbing sachets containing silica?

In the case of:

  • transport of clothing
  • transport of pharmaceutical products
  • shipping food products
  • shipping of electronic products

Highly efficient and non-toxic, silica gel is a desiccant that will work well in most cases. It is characterised by excellent value for money.

Clay – the material with the highest anticorrosion properties

Desiccants can contain both silica and clay. This is a material that not only exhibits drying properties, but also, effectively protects goods from corrosion. Such properties make the product ideally suited for use in businesses operating in sectors such as:

  • food industry
  • mechanical industry
  • maritime transport

Moisture absorbing sachets made from clay are 100% natural and non-toxic.

Advantages of absorbent sachets

Moisture-absorbing sachets provide discreet protection against many threats to your goods. They are helpful in the fight against:

  • oxidation
  • corrosion
  • caking of powders
  • mould
  • moisture

The delivery of food products – especially fresh ones – requires special packaging. Thus, the use of moisture-absorbing sachets is also recommended for the transport of food, which will definitely improve the preservation process. As the moisture is absorbed, the goods can be delivered longer to their destination, in the best possible conditions.

Moisture-absorbing sachets based on silica or clay are non-toxic and reusable. Because of their absorption capacity, it is worth not limiting themselves to using them only for the transport of goods.

Regeneration of moisture-absorbing sachets

Absorbent sachets are not disposable – on the contrary! However, it often happens that the sachet is saturated with moisture when the goods arrive and is therefore no longer usable. Despite this, moisture-absorbing gel sachets can be regenerated very easily. Simply place them in a container and then, for one hour, heat the container to between 120°C and 150°C. In this way, the absorbent sachets regain all their absorbent properties and can be used again without any problems!

Use of moisture-absorbing sachets

The application possibilities for moisture-absorbing sachets are numerous and cover many areas that largely extend beyond the transportation of goods. Silica gel or clay can be used in the home to:

  • keep the cupboard dry
  • protect the windscreen from fogging up;
  • avoid the growth of bacteria or the appearance of mould in the bathroom or in the sports bag
  • store old photographs safely
  • try to rescue a phone that has fallen into a lot of water

Moisture absorbing sachets or otherwise moisture absorbers have important drying properties. Not only do they make it possible to keep all your shipments dry, but they also provide better protection for sensitive goods (such as food). The clay also has anti-corrosive properties, making it suitable for use in industrial environments. It is also very important to note that the life span of a moisture-absorbing sachet does not end once the parcel is opened and that it has many uses in the home.

Absorbent sachets – what should you know about them?

To summarise the topic, it is worth pointing out the most important points about the properties and uses of moisture-absorbing sachets. It is worth remembering that this type of sachet:

  • are made of silica gel or clay
  • are non-toxic and can absorb moisture from the environment in which they are placed
  • can be regenerated by heating them for one hour
  • have many ingenious applications in the home
