5 principles of eco-packaging according to RAJA

3min read 20/03/2020

It is well known that packaging is essential to protect goods during shipping. However, what can be done to reduce the amount of waste that their use entails? It is worth substituting for environmentally friendly packaging.

The use of packaging is not only necessary when transporting goods, but also for storing them in the warehouse. Without them, products would be damaged and destroyed. In addition, customers expect shipments to be delivered in impeccable condition – the way the packaging is used speaks volumes about the shipper. The challenge for the packaging industry is to package in an ecological, i.e. environmentally friendly manner. And this is exactly what RAJA is striving for. It involves using tailor-made products, thus reducing the use of more packaging than needed and better waste management. The RAJA Group operates based on the principles of the circular economy, which involves reducing waste by offering products that require less material, packaging made from recycled and recyclable or reusable materials.

What makes RAJA’s eco-friendly packaging stand out?

RAJA’s packaging is environmentally friendly and is labelled with the environmental organisation symbol. This certification covers the entire design and manufacturing cycle of products. Bio-based products are made from materials derived from renewable natural resources such as paper, cardboard, wood, corn starch and other plant-based raw materials. The packaging reduces waste, raw materials and energy consumption (e.g. recycled products or pre-stretched film, so-called pre-stretch). Products are recycled and collected.

RAJA’s eco-friendly packaging products include: wooden pallets, cardboard envelopes, paper bags and paper tape.

Most commonly used for packaging are cardboard boxes, available here, as well as cardboard envelopes and, additionally, paper tape for protection.

In order to reduce waste and pack more responsibly, RAJA applies the 5 principles of eco-packaging, which include: reduce, reuse, swap, renew and recycle. This makes the transition from a linear to a circular economy model.

Reduction of

It involves reducing the consumption of packaging by reducing its weight and volume to the minimum necessary to ensure adequate product protection. The choice of packaging formats adapted to products and shipments reduces unused packaging space, reduces the amount of packaging used, reduces waste and reduces transport costs.

Re-use

RAJA offers packaging designed to be resealable and thus reusable. This also applies to returnable packaging used by online shops. Such products include: boxes with double adhesive tape, transport containers or plastic pallets.

Replacement

Packaging that cannot be recycled is replaced by environmentally friendly packaging. This means environmentally friendly packaging with the same protective properties and meeting the needs of customers.

Renewal

RAJA uses packaging produced on the basis of sustainably sourced biological raw materials, manufactured from renewable natural materials. This contributes to reducing the environmental impact. The pulp used as component material for cardboard and paper packaging (e.g. paper bags, cardboard envelopes or paper tape) is made up of 70 per cent wood from logging necessary for the proper maintenance of commercial forests and 30 per cent raw material from the by-product of wood processing in sawmills. As many as 1186 of the company’s products are made from renewable materials.

Recycling

The recycling process gives packaging a second life while minimising waste. RAJA increases the proportion of recyclable packaging, reuses materials and encourages selective waste collection. Such a recyclable, environmentally friendly material is cardboard, which is 100% renewable and 100% biodegradable. Plastic recycling processes are also being developed. The company’s goal is to increase the level of this process to 60% in 2030.

A wide range of eco-friendly packaging, including wooden pallets, can be found in the shop.
