Do you need thick, rigid cardboard boxes for packaging?

3min read 21/09/2020

If you need sturdy cardboard boxes for packing your parcels, then the best option is to choose those made from top-quality corrugated cardboard with the right weight and wave thickness.

Every online shop needs sturdy and strong cardboard boxes for packing parcels, especially if they are heavier. When the box is not rigid and thick, the bottom of the box may not support the weight. For larger and heavier parcels, cartons made of strong 3, 5 or 7-layer cardboard are recommended.

Thick cardboard boxes – which ones?

Thick and rigid cardboard boxes are those made of strong cardboard, which is the thickest paper material. Cardboard is made by gluing together several layers of paper pulp. Cardboard comes in two forms – as solid cardboard (used to make furniture – otherwise known as solid furniture/tapestry cardboard) and corrugated cardboard (used primarily to make cardboard boxes). The latter is made by combining 2 to 7 liners, with the middle layer being corrugated – this makes the sheet stiffer.

Corrugated board is very strong and resistant to: flat crushing (FCT), columnar (vertical) crushing (ECT) and compression (BCT). The higher the density of the cardboard used, the harder and more resistant it is to mechanical damage. A paperboard weight of 280-560 g/m2 is typical for 3-ply cardboard, 570-1200 g/m2 for 5-ply cardboard and over 1200 g/m2 for 7-ply cardboard.

In addition, cardboard is a cheap material and has a wide range of applications.

Types of corrugated cardboard

Corrugated cardboard comes in 2- to 7-ply versions. Most often, the 3- to 5-ply and sometimes 7-ply are used for thick cardboard.

In 3-ply cardboard there are 3 types of waves: B (board thickness of approximately 3 mm), C (board thickness of approximately 4 mm) and E (microwave – board thickness of approximately 1 mm). 5-ply cardboard is made by combining waves: BC, EB, BCA or AAC. On the other hand, 7-ply paperboard is a mixed wave of BCC or BBC with a height of approx. 10 mm.

What does it depend on what kind of cardboard is made of? It depends on what you want to ship or store in it. Thus, stiff cardboard boxes made of 3-ply cardboard are used for packing rather lightweight goods. Packaging made of 5-layer cardboard is more robust and resistant to moisture and damage. 7-ply cardboard boxes have a triple wall thickness and are therefore the most resistant – they can be used for packing heavy goods.
