Discover our bestsellers among cardboard boxes for packaging.

Which cardboard boxes are most commonly used by online shops for shipping? Find out about the best-selling shipping boxes and how thick the cardboard from which cardboard boxes are made should be.

There are two types of cardboard boxes that are most commonly used – cut (postal) boxes and automatic bottom boxes. These packages are made of strong corrugated cardboard, which can be of different thicknesses. They can be 3-ply cartons, 5-ply cartons or 7-ply cartons.

Types of corrugated cardboard

Corrugated cardboardcartons can vary in thickness. What is the best type to choose? It all depends on what you are specifically shipping – the heavier the products, the thicker the cardboard the boxes should be made of.

2-ply cardboard is the thinnest. It is completely biodegradable. It is used by courier companies, warehouses and wholesalers.

3-ply cardboard is made of 2 layers of paper and a corrugated layer in the middle. It is used not only to make boxes, but also as spacers to pack fragile objects, in the construction industry as a protective element and as an acoustic and thermal insulator. It is the 3-layer cardboard boxes that are most often used for shipping.

5-ply cardboard boxes are stronger than 3-ply cardboard boxes, as they are made of 3 layers of paper with 2 corrugated layers. 7-ply cardboard consists of 4 layers of paper and 3 layers of corrugated board. 7-ply cardboard boxes are the strongest and are suitable for packing heavy parcels.

What are cardboard boxes?

Die-cut cardboardboxes are cardboard packaging made from a die-cutting machine. They can be of any shape and size. They have interlocking flaps and wings, so there is no need for adhesive tape. They have double walls, so they are strong and resistant to possible damage. Their great advantage is that they can be used repeatedly. They can have windows and handles and individual printing. In addition, they are very aesthetically pleasing. They are available as 3-, 5- or 7-ply cartons.

Rajapost’s cut cartons are available in 2 colour versions – brown and white. You can also order flat cut cartons for shipping flat items.

What are cardboard boxes?cardboard boxes with automatic bottom?

This type of packaging is also popularly ordered because of the space-saving storage – when folded, the cartons take up really little space. Auto-bottom cartons are quick to assemble – just press the sides and you’re done. They have an adhesive strip, so there is no need for tape. They are very strong – their bottoms are reinforced with an extra layer of cardboard. They are made from up to 70% recycled material and can be recycled after use.

Companies are so keen to order them because using them saves a lot of time for the packaging staff. They are literally folded in seconds. They are most often used for packing small white and brown goods, pictures or books.

The choice of pre-folded cartons and those with automatic bottoms not only saves time, but also money. Employees can pack more efficiently and therefore spend less time doing it – the less time needed for packing, the fewer employees need to be employed. Just like the automatic bottom cartons, the cutter boxes can also be stored unfolded.

Other types of cardboard boxes

Online shops also like to use height-adjustable cartons with automatic bottoms so that the packaging can be adapted to the specific item being shipped. For the shipment of books, so-called wrappers are used, which are special book boxes with self-adhesive closures and scales for height adjustment. Long cardboard boxes and square Quattropack tubes are used for shipping long and narrow items, and special wine boxes are used for shipping bottles.

Thermal packs are also available for shipping food or medicines. Returnable cartons, i.e. cartons that can be reused by the customer if he or she wishes to return the ordered goods, are also very popular. Such packages are equipped with a double adhesive strip. For shipping smaller products, retailers often do not use boxes, but protective bubble envelopes and cardboard protective envelopes for shipping flat items.
